God Watches Over Your Sleep: Psalms for Bedtime
In the Bible there is a book of songs and prayers: the Psalms. In them there are very beautiful sentences to say to God before sleeping.
One says:
—In peace I lie down and sleep at once, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety (Psalm 4).
Another says:
—I lie down and sleep, and I wake again, because the Lord sustains me (Psalm 3).
There is a psalm that speaks of God as someone who never tires of watching over us:
—He will not let your foot slip, your guardian does not slumber. He who watches over his people neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121).
Another psalm speaks of the angels:
—He has given his angels orders to guard you in all your ways (Psalm 91).
And it also says:
—You will not fear the terror of the night (Psalm 91).
And another says that God gives sleep to those he loves (Psalm 127).
God's people prayed these sentences many, many years ago. Today you can pray them.
You can say softly: "In peace I lie down and sleep at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
Let's talk: Which of these sentences do you like best to pray before sleeping?
Close your eyes and repeat: "In peace I lie down and sleep at once." Goodnight.
