The Wise Men Follow the Star
Jesus had been born in Bethlehem, when Herod was king. Some wise men from the East came to Jerusalem and asked:
—Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star rise and have come to worship him.
King Herod was troubled when he heard this. He gathered the priests and the teachers of the law and asked them where the Messiah was to be born.
—In Bethlehem of Judea —they answered—, because that is what the prophet wrote.
Herod called the wise men in secret and said to them:
—Go to Bethlehem and find out all you can about the child. When you find him, let me know, so that I too may go and worship him.
The wise men went on their way, and the star they had seen went ahead of them, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
They went into the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother. They knelt down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they returned to their country by another road.
The Bible does not say how many wise men there were, or what their names were. It only tells us that they came from the East and brought three gifts.
Let's talk: The wise men brought gifts to Jesus. What would you give him?
The best gift for Jesus is your love. Goodnight.
