The Good Samaritan
A teacher of the law asked Jesus how he could inherit eternal life. Jesus answered that one must love God and love one's neighbor as oneself.
—And who is my neighbor? —the teacher asked.
Jesus answered with a story.
—A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They beat him, took everything he had and went away, leaving him half dead.
—By chance a priest was going down the same road. When he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite came, saw him and passed by on the other side.
—But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came to where the man was, saw him and felt compassion. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn and took care of him.
—The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper: "Look after him, and when I return I will reimburse you for any extra expense you have."
Then Jesus asked:
—Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?
—The one who had compassion on him —the teacher answered.
—Go and do likewise —Jesus told him.
A neighbor is anyone who needs our help.
Let's talk: Whom can you help this week, like the Samaritan?
Helping someone in need is loving like Jesus. Goodnight.
