The Disciples on the Road to Emmaus
On the same day that Jesus rose, two of his disciples were walking to a village called Emmaus. They were talking about everything that had happened.
While they were talking, Jesus came near and walked along with them. But they did not recognize him.
—What are you discussing together as you walk along? —he asked them.
They stood still, looking sad. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him:
—Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there these days?
They told him what had happened with Jesus of Nazareth.
—We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel —they said.
Then Jesus explained to them, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him:
—Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.
Jesus went in to stay with them. When they sat down at the table, he took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. But he disappeared.
—Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us? —they said to each other.
They got up at once and returned to Jerusalem to tell what they had seen.
Jesus walks with us, even if we cannot see him.
Let's talk: The disciples said "Stay with us." Can you say it to Jesus tonight too?
Before sleeping say: "Stay with me, Lord, for it is late." Goodnight.
