Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath
The prophet Elijah hid beside a stream, because God had told him to. He drank water from the stream, and the ravens brought him bread and meat morning and evening. But after a while, the stream dried up.
Then God said to him:
—Get up and go to Zarephath. There I have commanded a widow to give you food.
Elijah went. At the entrance to the town, he saw a woman gathering sticks.
—Please bring me a little water in a jar so I may drink —he asked her.
As she was going to get it, Elijah said:
—Please bring me also a piece of bread.
—I have no bread —she answered—. All I have left is a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. I am gathering a few sticks to make something for my son and me. We will eat it, and then we will die.
—Do not be afraid —Elijah told her—. Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf and bring it to me. Then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord says: "The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain."
The woman went and did what Elijah had told her. And she, her son and Elijah ate for many days. The jar of flour was not used up, and the jug of oil did not run dry, just as God had said.
Let's talk: The widow shared the little she had. What can you share?
When we share, God makes sure there is enough. Goodnight.
