David and Jonathan, Two Good Friends
Jonathan was the son of King Saul. When David finished speaking with the king, Jonathan felt a great affection for him. The Bible says he loved him as himself.
Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him very much. He took off the cloak he was wearing and gave it to David. He also gave him his tunic, his sword, his bow and his belt.
But with time, King Saul began to be jealous of David and wanted to harm him. David went to talk with Jonathan.
—What have I done? —he asked—. What wrong have I done to your father, that he seeks my life?
—That is not so! —Jonathan answered—. Nothing will happen to you. I will do for you whatever you ask.
Jonathan spoke with his father to defend David. When he saw that Saul was determined to harm him, he warned his friend so that he could get to safety.
The two friends said goodbye in tears. Jonathan told him:
—Go in peace. We have both sworn in the name of the Lord that we will remain friends, you and I, and so will our descendants.
David and Jonathan always looked after each other.
Let's talk: Who is your best friend? How do you take care of them?
God gives us friends to love and look after us. Thank him for yours. Goodnight.
